Instrument Rental Information

Be a knowledgeable consumer when you rent- Questions to Ask Before You Rent

The rental program at Lashof Violins has been developed with the desires of the public and private teaching community in mind. Working with music educators throughout the area, we have created a rental program to meet the needs of the beginning and advancing student. Our program is designed to grow with your student, allowing for the highest amount of rental equity.

From the beginning, Lashof Violins' professional staff establish the standards for the quality of our instruments by making the adjustments expected by the professional players and teachers who frequent our shop.  By having a properly adjusted and maintained rental instrument, the student doesn't suffer in their studies due to an inadequately adjusted instrument. After all, if a seasoned player has a difficult time making a poorly adjusted instrument sound nice, imagine how hard it is for someone who is just learning to play!

All Lashof Violins' rental instruments are set up to exceed the MENC standards for orchestra instruments. We carry a number of different brands of instruments for rental and are very selective of the instruments we are proud to offer. European instruments, due to the low dollar exchange rate, are generally more expensive (and many times, of a lower quality in workmanship and sound), to the high quality student Asian instruments available today.

INSTRUMENT RENTALS

Instrument Rentals are available to all Washington D.C. Metro area customers. All rentals are paid quarterly & 100% of the rental money paid will be credited toward the purchase of any rental instrument of equal or greater value as long as you are current with the contract. Rental Rates differ depending on the value of the instrument rented.

In order to secure a rental with Lashof Violins, the renter must present a  Major Credit Card (the card holder must be present at the time of rental; no exceptions) as a guarantee of payment and a photo ID with current address. Lashof Violins also requires that the credit card on file be used for the first rental payment.

Once a rental instrument is paid off, that instrument may be used as a trade-in (minus a 10% devaluation per year of ownership) for another instrument of similar value, less any loss in value due to misuse, damage, or repairs needed. (Sorry, we do not repurchase rental instruments. Instruments damaged beyond reasonable repair may not be accepted as trades. All trade-ins must be made by the original purchaser.)

For Example: You purchased a rental violin for $400 and wish to trade it in ten months later. Your trade-in value toward an instrument of equal or greater value at that time would be 90% of the $400, which would be $360.00. When you bring in your instrument, we will also evaluate it to determine whether or not there will be additional devaluation for excessive wear or repairs needed.

If trading a paid-off rental instrument for a handmade, step-up instrument, the trade-in value will be 70% of rental money paid plus a $75 (violin/viola) or $150 (cello) fee for exchange, less any loss in value due to misuse, damage, or repairs needed

For Example: You purchased a rental viola for $600 and wish to trade it in toward an upgraded, handmade viola. Your trade-in value will be 70% of the $600 minus the $75 trade in fee, making your trade-in value $345.00. After assessing the instrument, we will determine whether or not any additional devaluation will be necessary due to excessive wear or damage.

 MAINTENANCE/INSURANCE OPTION

A maintenance/insurance  option is available at $15.00 per quarter for Violin and Viola, $30.00 per quarter for Cello.

The maintenance/insurance option has been made available to provide coverage for your rental instrument. The nominal fee for these services, payable with your rental payments, will protect you throughout the entire time you rent our instrument. (We cannot offer this option once the instrument is purchased)

Coverage includes all adjustments to keep your instrument in playing condition and repairs made to damaged instruments, as well as replacement if the instrument is lost or stolen.  For all maintenance and repairs, the instrument must be returned to Lashof Violins who will have the sole discretion in determining if the instrument will be repaired or replaced.  In case of loss or theft, a copy of a police report will be required prior to replacement of the instrument.  In cases of replacement, the instrument will be replaced as closely to the original as Lashof Violins has available.  Coverage does not include intentional or malicious damage, such as carving or writing on the instrument or case, or applying damaging decals (such as stickers, moleskin, or nametags); nor does it cover disposable accessories (such as strings or rosin).

What size instrument do I need?

We at Lashof Violins strongly encourage having the student sized by a teacher or at a local violin shop where an experienced eye can offer the best recommendation. If neither option is a possibility, you can measure the student using an ordinary yardstick and use the  following measurements as an approximate guide:

To use the following guide: Place the yard stick under the student's chin, against the left side of the neck with the left arm extended but not stretched.  Measure to the middle of the palm to determine the approximate correct size. (measurements are courtesy of Knilling stringed instruments)

If you have a selection of instruments to use in determining the correct instrument size:

Support the instrument under the chin on the left shoulder in playing position. The instrument is of the proper size if the palm and fingers of the left hand can comfortably cup the scroll with the elbow having a slight bend. These are only general guidelines that most teachers use.  Suzuki Method ™ teachers generally feel that "smaller is better" if in doubt.

Instrument sizing is a complimentary service offered by Lashof Violins.
