Lashof Violins' Rental Program and Policy

Lashof Violins' Instrument Rental Program

rental outfit lInstrument rentals are available to all Maryland and Washington, D.C. Metro area customers. Our rental program offers affordable, easy-to-play instruments, an optional, comprehensive maintenance and insurance plan, and simple payment terms designed to grow with the student.

All rentals are paid quarterly (every three months) & 100% of the rental money paid can accumulate toward the purchase of an instrument. With our rental program you rent until you own or return your instrument--no credit cut-off dates, restocking fees, or deposits.

For the rental contract we require a valid major credit/debit card, photo ID, and proof of current address. We also suggest bringing the student along so we can help with sizing and to teach the student how to care for their instrument.

All rental contracts must be completed in person. Lashof Violins does not ship rentals.

*Optional Maintenance/Insurance Program. Although we warranty and adjust/repair any issues due to manufacturer defect, we do understand accidents can happen. For this reason, we offer an optional maintenance/insurance program. For a nominal fee payable with your quarterly rental payment, the coverage includes 100% of the cost of all adjustments to keep the instrument in playing condition, repairs made to damaged instruments, and replacement if the instrument is lost or stolen. (Some exclusions apply. For more information on our maintenance/insurance program, please click here.)

The length of the rental process varies upon the number of questions each customer has, but you can expect the process--from selecting an instrument to walking out the door--to take at least 20 minutes.

In order to secure a rental with Lashof Violins, the renter must present the following:

1. A  Major Credit Card. A major credit/debit card is required for the first payment and as a guarantee of future payments. (The card holder must be present at the time of rental; no exceptions. Prepaid gift cards will not be accepted for first rental payment(s).

3. We also recommend you bring the student (for sizing and because it's fun to chose an instrument) and any list/documentation provided by the teacher.

The Maintenance/Insurance Option

A Maintenance/Insurance Option is available at $15.00/quarter for standard Violin & Viola Rentals and $30.00/ quarter for Cello Rentals. (Image to Left: Violin destroyed in a rocking chair accident. Instrument was replaced through Maintenance/Insurance Option)

The maintenance/insurance coverage option has been made available for rental instruments. The optional, nominal fee for coverage, payable with your quarterly rental payments, will protect you while renting an instrument. (We cannot offer this option once the instrument is purchased.)

The coverage includes all adjustments to keep the instrument in playing condition, repairs made to damaged instruments, and replacement if the instrument is lost or stolen. For all maintenance and repairs, the instrument must be returned to Lashof Violins who will have the sole discretion in determining if the instrument will be repaired or replaced. In cases of loss or theft, a copy of a police report will be required prior to replacement of the instrument. In cases of replacement, the instrument will be replaced as closely to the original as Lashof Violins has available. Coverage does not include malicious or intentional damage (carving or writing on the instrument or case, or applying damaging decals such as stickers, moleskin, or name-tags) nor does it cover disposable accessories (such as strings or rosin).

Trading-In Purchased Rentals

Trading-In Toward Similar Quality Instruments

Once an instrument outfit is paid off through the rental program, the outfit may be traded-in for another outfit of equal or greater value. When trading-in an outfit purchased through rental toward another rental-quality instrument of equal or greater value, the trade-in policy is as follows:

*For the first 3 months of ownership, the trade-in value will be 100%, minus any loss in value due to misuse, damage, or repairs needed.

*After the first three months of ownership, the trade-in value will be 100% minus a 10% devaluation per year of ownership and less any loss in value due to misuse, damage, or repairs needed. (There is a maximum devaluation of 30%--excluding loss in value due to misuse, damage, repairs, etc.)***

For Example: Ten months after paying off your 1/2 violin outfit through rental, your son/daughter needs the larger 3/4 violin outfit. Your 1/2 violin outfit trade-in value (toward an instrument of equal or greater value) would be 90% of the $400, which would be $360.00. When you bring in your instrument, we will also evaluate its condition to determine whether or not there will be additional devaluation for excessive wear or repairs needed. This policy applies to instruments purchased from Lashof Violins.

***Please note: we do not repurchase or buy-back rental instruments. Instruments damaged beyond reasonable repair may not be accepted as trades. All trade-ins must be made by the original purchaser; trade-ins made by someone other than original purchaser will be evaluated individually.

Trading-Up In Quality from a Purchased Rental

When trading an outfit paid-off through rental toward a handmade, step-up instrument, the trade-in value will be as follows:

*The trade-in value will be 70% of rental money paid plus a $75 (violin/viola) or $150 (cello) fee for exchange, less any loss in value due to misuse, damage, or excessive repairs needed.

For Example: You purchased a viola for $600 through rental and wish to trade it in toward an upgraded instrument. Your trade-in value toward the step-up instrument would be 70% of the $600, ($600 x 70%= 420.00), minus the $75 fee, which would give you a maximum trade-in value of $345.00. When you bring in your instrument for trade, we will also evaluate its condition to determine whether or not there will be additional devaluation for excessive wear/damage or repairs needed. This policy applies to instruments purchased through Lashof Violins. All trade-ins must be made by original purchaser; trade-ins made by someone other than original purchaser will be evaluated individually.

Trading-In a Student Quality Instrument Outright Purchase (Not Purchased Through Rental)

When trading an outfit purchased outright (not through rental) toward another student quality instrument or handmade, step-up instrument, the trade-in value will be as follows:

*The trade-in value will be 100% of the outfit price paid plus a $75 (violin/viola) or $150 (cello) fee for exchange, less any loss in value due to misuse, damage, or excessive repairs needed.

*This policy also applies to instruments paid off within the first three months of rental; those which include the 30% discount for early-payoff.

For Example: You outright purchased a violin for $385 (not through a completed rental) and wish to trade it in toward an upgraded instrument. Your trade-in value toward the instrument would be 100% of the $385 minus the $75 fee, which would give you a maximum trade-in value of $310.00.

Handmade Trade-Ins

When trading a handmade instrument and bow (in this instance, by "handmade" we mean anything above a rental quality purchase) to another handmade instrument/ outfit of equal or greater value, the trade-in value may be up to 100% for the instrument and bow, less any loss in value due to misuse, damage, or excessive repairs needed. (Case trade-ins are accepted on a case-by-case instance and will be valued according to wear/condition.)

Lashof Violins does not assess a flat restoration fee or flat trade-in value to handmade instruments/bows. Each instrument/bow is evaluated individually. Well-maintained instruments/bows will have higher trade-in values than items showing signs of neglect/damage or in need of maintenance. This policy applies toward instruments/bows purchased through Lashof Violins. All trade-ins must be made by original purchaser; trade-ins made by someone other than original purchaser will be evaluated individually.
